Philipo Chimbini - Ukuyemba - Zambian Album (1991)

Released in 1991, this one is actually pretty rare and was among the last documented albums released by Teal under the Kariba label. My copy is in decent condition, all things considered, although the album cover is pretty ruined. Phillipo Chimbini is a singer who is well known to Zambians who grew up in the 80's, but also might be known to Zambians who grew up on the early 2000's. He got his start in the music industry in the late 1970's or early 1980's. According to music historian Leonard Koloko, Chimbini claimed that he was inspired to perform music due to a dream that directed him to address the wrongs he saw by singing about them. He was a devout Catholic who wrote secular and religious music. He sang mostly in Bemba. His songs tackled social issues and advocated for rural areas. He even sang about AIDS, as social issue quite topical in the early 2000's. None of Chimbini's early music has turned up on the market. In fact, only two of his earlier albums have been documented in the collector market, Yo Yo Mulilo and this one. Chimini released four albums between 1986 and 1995. He used a backing group known as the Chimbini boys for his later albums, though I've been unable to identify any of the members. Chimbini's career temporily ended with the end of Teal, but he saw a revival of his career with the release of Italanta in 2005 that also spawned a music video you can find here on youtube. He released another album in 2007 and that's the last I know of his career. He passed away on April 13, 2018 after suffering a stoke at his home in Kitwe. Want more of Philipo Chimbini?
