Learn what affects the rate of nucleophilic substitution in halogenoalkanes in this A-Level Chemistry Learn video. You’ll learn why the rate of nucleophilic substitution depends on the strength and bond enthalpy of the carbon–halogen bond rather than its polarity. You’ll then explore how the reactivity of halogenoalkanes can be investigated by comparing their rates of hydrolysis using aqueous silver nitrate, including the formation and colours of silver halide precipitates and why fluoroalkanes cannot be investigated using this method.

🧪 A Better Way to Study A-Level Chemistry 🧪
MrColeScience is built around the Learn, Revise, Practise Method — a structured approach designed to help you build understanding, strengthen your memory and apply your knowledge confidently in exams.
Every topic follows the same three-step journey:
📖 Learn – Build a clear understanding of the chemistry through focused, exam-relevant lessons.
🧠 Revise – Strengthen your memory using effective revision strategies.
✍️ Practise – Apply your knowledge confidently using exam-style questions and worked solutions.
📚 In this lesson you’ll learn 📚
✅ What affects the rate of nucleophilic substitution in halogenoalkanes.
✅ How the rate of hydrolysis of halogenoalkanes can be used to investigate the reactivity of halogenoalkanes.
✅ Why fluoroalkanes are the most reactive halogenoalkane and iodoalkanes are the least reactive.
