This week we discuss the NK chunk. NK is considered a blend instead of a digraph because it makes two sounds instead of one: first we hear a nasally /ng/ sound, and then a /k/ sound. The NK pattern can be tricky for young students who hear the /ng/ sound and are tempted to write NGK instead of NK. Just like the NG pattern, NK always shows up after a single vowel. ANK makes a long vowel sound (ex: bank, tank), while INK, ONK, and UNK make short vowels sounds (ex: pink, honk, dunk). ENK does not appear in the English language. As they review the meanings of each word on the list, students label nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Purchase Mrs. Rhoades’ grade 1 book or others from her 180 Days series at teachercreatedmaterials.com or from your favorite online bookseller. #180days #180daysofspellingandwordstudy #1stgrade #1stgradespellingcurriculum #spelling #wordstudy #elementaryeducation #elementaryschool #homeschooling #homeschool #school #morphology #phonics #english #englishlanguagelearners #firstgrade#scienceofreading
