"Join me today as we wander through the heart of Spain’s capital!
While Madrid is a bustling modern metropolis, its "Old Town" is a time capsule from the 16th and 17th centuries. Known as El Madrid de los Austrias, this area was transformed by the Habsburg dynasty (the "Austrias") after King Philip II moved the Spanish court here in 1561.
Before the grand palaces arrived, Madrid was actually a modest medieval fortress town. The Habsburgs reimagined it with narrow, labyrinthine streets and grand squares like the Plaza Mayor, which has served as everything from a marketplace and a theater to the site of royal weddings and even bullfights!
One of the most fascinating layers of its history is that the name "Madrid" comes from the Arabic word Mayrit, meaning "place of many springs." You can still see remnants of the original 9th-century Arab walls near the Royal Palace, reminding us that Old Town Madrid is a beautiful mosaic of Muslim, Medieval, and Imperial Spanish history.
