It's 3 a.m., your heating just died, and it's -30°F outside. How long until the cold becomes a real problem? For our ancestors, that wasn't a bad night. It was every winter, for hundreds of thousands of years. In this video, we look at how ancient humans survived ice age winters with no heaters, no stores, and a body built for warm Africa. We cover why wet is deadlier than cold, how people burned bone and fat for fire, how a tiny bone needle made fitted clothing possible, and how they built houses out of mammoth bones with doors dug lower than the beds. We also look at snow as insulation, bone "sunglasses" against snow blindness, food storage in frozen pits, group hunting at Solutré, body heat and sharing, the cold-adapted bodies of people in Tierra del Fuego, and the debated theory that some early humans may have hibernated. The hibernation idea is a hypothesis, not settled science, and the video says so. Where researchers disagree, we try to show both sides. Sources: • Gowlett, J. A. J. (2016).
