SLEEP WALK, REFLECTION, AND THE SURF BALLROOM
67 years to the day of the tragic 'Winter Dance Party' where Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson played their final show before a fateful plane crash, Johnny Farina of Santo & Johnny dedicated and played 'Sleep Walk' at the historic Surf Ballroom. Released in 1959, the song is closely tied to the times and to the movie 'La Bamba' about Ritchie Valens' life.
After Johnny shared about how he and his brother played in Iowa at the Electric Park Ballroom in Waterloo in 1959, he remarked how much it meant to play at The Surf Ballroom tonight for his first time. He spoke about it with real reverence, knowing the weight of the room and its place in American music.
When he played, it wasn’t just a performance; it felt like an offering, every note allowed to breathe. 'Sleep Walk' carries that same quiet ache audiences remember from 'La Bamba', where the song underscored love, longing, loss, and the fragile beauty behind rock ’n’ roll dreams.
At the Surf, all of that history — song, venue, film, and feeling — came together in one timeless moment.
