It's central London in September 2006 aboard the only rear-engined double-decker ever built by AEC, making a rare appearance on routes 9 and 15. I ride the lower deck at sitting next to the engine, so you hear its unusual sounds, also viewing through the back window over the engine. Later, I ride the upper deck too and we also see the bus parked up near the Royal Albert Hall. ** FRM fact file ** New in 1966, London Transport FRM1 (KGY 4D) was literally a back-to-front Routemaster, cleverly using about 60% of parts common with the usual front-engined ones. It has the larger 11.3 litre AEC AV691 engine as fitted to Green Line RCL-class Routemaster coaches, connected to an AEC semi-automatic gearbox. Despite being a one-off prototype of a potential fleet of the type, it was always highly regarded by drivers and engineers as a superb bus. FRM1 ran with LT from 1966 until 1983 when it was wisely handed over to the LT Museum. Appearances in service are rare since then, so I hope you enjoy this ride with me! Remember, this was filmed 20 years ago on equipment of the time, so quality is different to my latest videos uploaded today in full HD. Enjoy this very rare bus ride!
