The Soviet Union built some of the most extreme multi-axle military vehicles ever made. But what happened when those same machines were sent into civilian service? In this video, we look at the strange civilian career of the Maz-543 family, from heavy cargo trucks and airport fire engines to cranes and logging vehicles. These machines were originally developed for military use, but over time they found work in oil and gas regions, construction, industry, and some of the harshest parts of the Soviet Union. We’ll also look at why the idea made sense, why it often didn’t, how expensive these machines were to operate, and why some civilian versions survived long after the Soviet Union itself disappeared.
