Sisu SRH 450 Mammoth: How Do You Haul 120 Tons Underground?

The Sisu SRH 450 Mammoth was one of the most extreme mining trucks ever built. Designed for Sweden’s Malmberget iron ore mine, this seven-axle road train could carry around 120 tons of ore deep underground, where ordinary giant haul trucks simply could not operate. In this video, we look at why LKAB needed such an unusual machine, how Sisu engineered a 170-ton underground truck, why it used multiple steering axles and a side-tipping trailer, and how the Mammoth performed in real service. We’ll also look at why only five were built, what eventually replaced them, and why the basic transport concept behind the Mammoth is still used at Malmberget today.
