My mother kept forty-one bread bags folded into an oatmeal box, and she never once ran short of a bread bag. Most of what we save just in case never comes out of the drawer at all. At school our only just in case was one case of crackers for the morning the bread truck did not come. These are the eleven things I quit saving in my own house, from the lids with no tubs to the boxes we leave for our families to sort out.
I am Mrs. Doris. A school kitchen in Scioto County, Ohio, on a dollar and five cents a tray.
Notes: margarine tubs, takeout containers and whipped topping bowls are not meant for the microwave, so warm leftovers in glass or on a plate. Never pour paint down a drain; dried latex can go in the trash in many places, while oil-based paint goes to a household hazardous waste day, so check your county's rules. Jars from store-bought food are not made for home canning, so use real canning jars and new flat lids. Shoes that sat in the box for years can crumble on the first wear, so check the soles before a big day.
