My first year placing orders, the district sent my form back. A woman named Juanita Pell had gone down my list and circled nine things. Not because they cost too much. Because we already had them, under another name, in a bigger bag.
I am Mrs. Doris. Thirty-five years in a school kitchen in Scioto County, Ohio, four hundred children a day on a dollar and five cents a tray.
That is most of a grocery aisle. Something you already own, in a smaller bag, with a name printed on it.
This is not cooking from scratch and it is not a lecture about processed food. These are twenty things where the packet and the thing in your cupboard are the same, and you can check every one of them tonight by turning the packet over and reading the back.
Two of them I paid for myself for eight years before Juanita showed me. Number one I have not bought since 1981.
THE ONE I TELL YOU TO BUY ANYWAY
Number seven is on this list and I will tell you outright that the bought version is easier. I am not going to dress that up to make the list look tidy. It is still worth knowing what is in it, because knowing means you can change it instead of buying a new bottle every time the season on the label changes.
THE ONE THAT ONLY WORKS IF YOU DID NUMBER FIVE
Number two is most of the way done before you start, but only if you did number five first. If you skip five, two is a lot of work. If you did five, two is four spices and a teaspoon of oil, and it takes a minute.
THE WORD ON THE BACK THAT TELLS YOU EVERYTHING
Ingredients are printed in order of how much is in there. That is the only rule you need for this whole video. When you turn a packet over and the cheap thickener is sitting near the top of the list, you have found out what you are actually buying, and you did not need me to tell you.
The aisle is not lying to you. It is selling you the bag and the name, and charging you as though it were the food.
Which one are you going to stop buying, and which one did you try and it was not worth it? Both are useful. Tell me below, I read them all.
