In this talk, environmental archaeologists from Wessex Archaeology will explore the history of woodlands in Britain over the last 12,000 years. The different lines of evidence which can be used to examine past and present woodlands will be examined, including historical documents, maps and place names, as well as archaeological features. It will also demonstrate how palaeoenvironmental evidence, such pollen and beetle remains, can be used to examine what past woodlands looked like. An example of recent work undertaken by Wessex Archaeology will be given, where the investigations in a piece of woodland demonstrated its ancient status, ensuring its protection from development.
