Shen Yan climbs for it before dawn, because Shen Tang is at home with an empty pot and winter is not finished with them yet. He finds it. Then the bramble finds him — a thorn through the palm, a line of blood into the snow. What is buried under that ridge does not stay buried. The blood reaches it, and something old wakes up and decides, without asking, that it belongs in his chest now. This is the first episode of a new series. This one picks up where the quiet left off, and follows Shen Yan as he works out what he has been handed and what it will cost him. — 🍶 THE TWO ARTIFACTS The gourd does not swallow objects. It swallows force — sound, weather, impact. Uncork it into a gale and the gale goes in. Uncork it again over the village and the weather comes back out. Shen Yan names it in this episode: the Living Breath-Well. The cudgel is green bamboo, and it does what bamboo should not do. It lengthens until it spans a valley, it holds his weight at the tip, and it comes back to his hand in gold light when he calls it. — 🎧 LISTENING NOTES Best with headphones. The mountain is mixed wide — wind, snow underfoot, pine — and the gourd's two cork pops are the loudest small sounds in the episode on purpose. When the gale goes in, the world goes silent.
