Machine Studying asks whether an AI agent can develop deep understanding of a new domain before anyone knows the questions it will need to answer. Jacob X. Li explains the setup: give an agent a declarative corpus such as a codebase, drug discovery papers, or system logs, let it decide what to learn, then evaluate it on hidden downstream tasks while keeping the corpus available. Unlike Codex or Claude Code, which mainly spend inference-time compute exploring the material after a question arrives, studying shifts useful preparation earlier without replacing open-book access at test time. Connor compares the idea with always-on agents and discovery systems, while Jacob clarifies that studying is not necessarily about finding wholly new facts. It can reveal connections and practical expertise that the documents leave implicit, such as which API is more reliable or efficient.
