• Hundred Hues – Echoes of Karuta
Hundred Hues - Echoes of Karuta - is a musical project that reimagines each poem from the Hyakunin Isshu—a beloved anthology of one hundred classical Japanese waka poems—as contemporary English-language music.
Rather than translating the original poems directly, the project reconstructs their emotions, imagery, and human experiences into songs that resonate with modern listeners around the world.
Through Hundred Hues - Echoes of Karuta -, we hope to share the timeless spirit of the Hyakunin Isshu beyond language and cultural boundaries.
A haze is rising, and the cherry blossoms may soon disappear from view. But what if the mist is not merely something to fear, but the very thing that makes us long to see the blossoms just a little longer?
Inspired by Poem 73 of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, written by Gon Chunagon Masafusa, Don’t Veil the Blossoms explores the tension between beauty and the desire to hold on to it. Delicate melodies and a sense of gathering mist evoke the moment when something precious stands on the edge of being hidden from sight.
This song transforms an ancient poem into a contemporary musical experience—not by explaining its words, but by letting its longing breathe. The blossoms are there, the haze is coming, and all we want is a little more time to look.
Hundred Hues reimagines the emotional worlds of the Hyakunin Isshu through contemporary music, one poem and one distinct feeling at a time.
