Dragging files on a Mac can do much more than simply move them from one folder to another.
In this video, I'll show you how macOS changes what happens while you drag — how to copy a file with Option, create an alias, move through folders without dropping the file, open files by dragging them onto apps, add a file to Finder Favorites, drag webpage content from Safari, skip file-upload windows, work with Mail attachments, understand an important iCloud Drive behavior, and make dragging far easier with Three-Finger Drag and other trackpad gestures.
Some of these are small Mac features, but together they can save a surprising number of extra clicks when you work with files every day.
You'll learn:
How drag and drop works on Mac
How to copy files by holding Option while dragging
How to create an alias with Option + Command
How to open folders while you are still dragging a file
How to drag files directly onto Mac apps
How to add a file to the Finder Sidebar
How to drag text, images and links from Safari
How to drag files directly into website upload areas
How to drag Mail attachments into Finder
How to drag a document from the Preview title bar
What happens when you drag a file out of iCloud Drive
How to enable Three-Finger Drag — the trackpad gesture that makes dragging easier on a MacBook or Magic Trackpad
Most of these drag-and-drop techniques work the same way whether you use a MacBook, iMac, Mac mini or Mac Studio.
If you use a MacBook or a desktop Mac with a Magic Trackpad, you can also use Three-Finger Drag. If you use a mouse with an iMac, Mac mini or Mac Studio, normal click-and-drag remains the equivalent workflow.
Some menus or behavior may vary slightly depending on your macOS version, input device and the app or website you are using.
Which of these Mac dragging behaviors was new to you? Let me know in the comments.
