Featured on the Putumayo collection "¡Salsa!" Originally released on March 24th, 2009. From the liner notes: This track represents the musical gathering of one of Cuba’s greatest ensembles and a popular Puerto Rican singer who was at the forefront of the thriving New York salsa scene of the 60s and 70s. After singing with some of the New York Latin music scene’s greatest bandleaders, Cheo Feliciano released his first solo album in 1972. Founded in 1939, Orquesta Aragón has long been the standard-setter for the charanga format, which unites the elegant sounds of violins and flute with swinging Afro-Cuban percussion. Feliciano, who left his native Ponce, Puerto Rico for New York in 1952, grew up listening to Afro Cuban music. The political conflict between Cuba and the U.S. made it impossible for Orquesta Aragón to perform in the U.S. until the 1990s. In 1997, Feliciano visited Cuba for the first time, travelling with a 17-piece orchestra representing Puerto Rico’s finest musicians. He has since recorded with Orquesta Aragón on several occasions, including this collaboration on their 1999 release La Charanga Eterna. On “Son al Son” (Son to Son) Feliciano sings a passionate tribute to son and mentions some of the greatest figures in Cuban music history.
