In This Video, You Will Learn:
The Two Organ Systems: How the shoot system develops from the plumule while the root system originates from the embryonic radicle.
Tropisms & Core Functions: Why roots exhibit positive geotropism (growing with gravity) and how they drive anchorage, water/mineral absorption, conduction, and food storage.
Types of Root Systems:
Taproot System: Persistent primary root typical of dicots (Mustard, Mango, Chickpea).
Fibrous Root System: Shallow root clusters typical of monocots (Wheat, Rice, Maize).
Adventitious Root System: Roots arising from non-root tissue, such as stem nodes and leaves (Banyan tree, Sugarcane).
The 4 Structural Zones of the Root Apex:
Root Cap (Calyptra): Protects the apical meristem, secretes lubricating mucigel, and houses statoliths to sense gravity.
Meristematic Zone: The engine of cell division via rapid mitosis.
Region of Elongation: Rapid cell stretching pushing the root tip deeper into the soil.
Region of Maturation & Root Hairs: Epiblema-derived unicellular root hairs that maximize nutrient and water uptake.
Specialized Root Modifications:
Food Storage: Conical (Carrot), Fusiform (Radish), Napiform (Turnip), and Tuberous (Sweet Potato).
Mechanical Support: Pillar-like Prop roots (Banyan) and brace Stilt roots (Maize).
Aeration: Pneumatophores with lenticels in waterlogged mangrove environments.
