HYMN FOR THE MEMORIAL OF SAINT JOHN CHRYSOSTOM, BISHOP AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH (SEPTEMBER 13) | SAINT JOHN CHRYSOSTOM, GOLDEN-MOUTHED SHEPHERD
The Church celebrates the Memorial of Saint John Chrysostom, Bishop and Doctor of the Church, a great shepherd, preacher, and teacher of the Christian faith. His name, Chrysostom, meaning “Golden-Mouthed,” reflects the extraordinary eloquence with which he proclaimed the Word of God.
Saint John believed that preaching was not simply about speaking beautiful words. The proclamation of God's Word must lead people to conversion and to a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Through his homilies and writings, he explained Sacred Scripture clearly and challenged the faithful to allow the Gospel to transform their daily lives.
His courage was especially evident when he confronted injustice and defended the dignity of the poor. He reminded the wealthy and powerful that material possessions are gifts entrusted by God and that Christians have a responsibility to care for those in need. His preaching therefore united faith with charity, worship with justice, and knowledge with action.
Saint John also experienced opposition and exile because he refused to compromise the truth. His life reminds us that being faithful to Christ does not always mean receiving approval from others. Sometimes discipleship requires courage—the courage to speak the truth with charity and to remain faithful even when doing so is difficult.
As we celebrate his memorial, let us pray for bishops, priests, deacons, catechists, teachers, preachers, and all who proclaim the Gospel. May they imitate Saint John Chrysostom by proclaiming God's Word faithfully, clearly, courageously, and with genuine pastoral love.
Let us also ask ourselves how we receive the Word of God. Do we merely listen to Scripture, or do we allow it to transform our attitudes, decisions, relationships, and actions? The example of Saint John challenges us not only to hear the Word, but to live the Word.
May Saint John Chrysostom inspire us to love Sacred Scripture, participate more deeply in the Church's worship, defend the dignity of every person, care for the poor, and proclaim Christ through both our words and our lives.
Saint John Chrysostom, Bishop and Doctor of the Church, pray for us!
