An hour of slow Chicago blues for late nights — electric guitar, harmonica and Hammond organ, played slow and heavy, the way it sounded in the back rooms of the West Side.
Lake Shore Drive, sometime after midnight. The wipers keep time, the dashboard glows amber, and the city comes up in the windshield one streetlight at a time. He's had the same car for twenty years and the same route for longer. The radio stays off. He doesn't need it.
He doesn't speed.
He doesn't take the shortcut.
He drives until the thinking's done,
then turns for home.
