200 Years of Refusing to Believe in Germs | Science History for Sleep
We could see germs for two hundred years before we accepted that they make us ill. The microscopic world was described in the 1670s. Germ theory was not widely accepted until the 1880s. This is the story of what happened in between.
This long-form history of science documentary follows the slow discovery of germ theory — from Leeuwenhoek's first observations of microorganisms, through miasma theory, Semmelweis and handwashing, John Snow and the Broad Street cholera outbreak, Pasteur's experiments on spontaneous generation, Lister and antiseptic surgery, and Koch's work identifying the bacteria behind anthrax and tuberculosis. Along the way it looks at why good evidence was rejected and who was overlooked.
Calm narration, steady pacing, no sudden volume changes. Made for quiet nighttime listening and for falling asleep to.
