In this episode of the Lucreative Africa Podcast, we sit down with Joan Mazimhaka, co-founder and CEO of Illume Creative Studio, to talk about what it really takes to build a creative business that lasts.
Fifteen years after co-founding Illume in Kigali, Joan shares lessons from building a creative agency, navigating changing markets, working with co-founders, adapting when things do not go according to plan and creating a business that can remain sustainable through periods of uncertainty.
We also talk about leadership, delegation, communicating the value of creative work, pricing, professionalism and why talent alone is not enough to build a sustainable creative career. Joan shares her perspective on what makes creatives easier to work with, the mistakes that can damage your reputation and the importance of treating your creative work like a business.
The conversation also explores the work Illume is doing to support Rwanda's creative ecosystem and why creating access, networks and opportunities for creatives matters.
Whether you're building a creative agency, working independently or trying to turn your creative skills into a sustainable career, this conversation is full of practical lessons from someone who has spent over a decade building in the industry.
