“A REPUBLIC, NOT A DEMOCRACY”: A Brief and Troubling History of Voter Suppression in the United States A FREE virtual lecture with UConn Professor Christopher Vials recorded on Thursday, October 29 at 6:30pm “Voter suppression” follows a long pattern in US history but it can, at times, cross over into full-blown authoritarianism, even fascism. This talk gives a brief history of the political right’s relationship to democracy and aims to help us name what we see unfolding before our eyes today. ABOUT OUR SPEAKER Christopher (Chris) Vials is a Professor of English at UConn (Storrs). Vials recently published The Antifascism Reader (Edited with Bill V. Mullen) Verso Books, 2020. His current research interests include far right movements, the way they have shaped the U.S. political mainstream, and the cultural impact of the US far right.
