This Above All is an American black-and-white romantic war drama directed by Anatole Litvak and released by 20th Century-Fox in 1942. It stars Tyrone Power and Joan Fontaine and is based on Eric Knight’s novel of the same name. Plot: The story takes place in England during World War II, shortly after the fall of France in 1940. Prudence “Pru” Cathaway (Joan Fontaine) is a young woman from a wealthy aristocratic family. Defying her family’s expectations, she joins the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) and chooses to serve her country. During her service, she meets Clive Briggs (Tyrone Power), a working-class British soldier who has returned from the disastrous evacuation at Dunkirk. Clive has become deeply disillusioned with the war and bitter toward Britain's privileged upper classes. He believes ordinary soldiers are being asked to risk their lives to preserve a society that benefits the wealthy. Despite their very different backgrounds and Clive's hostility toward her social class, Prudence falls in love with him. She eventually discovers that Clive has gone AWOL rather than return to military service. Their romance develops against the backdrop of wartime Britain, air raids and the Battle of Britain. Prudence tries to help Clive overcome his bitterness and rediscover what he is actually fighting for. Their relationship ultimately forces Clive to confront his beliefs about duty, love, sacrifice and his country.
