Hey guys! We’re now live on Spotify 🎧 https://open.spotify.com/show/033KQbE... At two in the morning, in a shrine wood in Chiba, a seventy two year old man was nailing a straw doll to a sacred tree. In June 2022 the police arrested him, and not for the curse. They charged him for the two holes he left in the tree. Japan has a legal position on that ritual, and the position is that it does not work, which is exactly why they charge you with vandalism instead. These are thirteen things nobody in Japan will do once the sun goes down. Some of them are in a government rulebook. Some come from a story somebody's grandmother told them. A curse ritual performed between one and three in the morning that gets you arrested for property damage. A game with a coin that put five schoolgirls in hospital in one week in 1974 and is still banned in Japanese schools. A rule about chopsticks that is not table manners at all, it is an exact description of a funeral. And a national loudspeaker network that switches on every evening in thousands of Japanese towns to tell children the dark is coming. Almost none of these rules are about being frightened. Every one of them is a small procedure for not accidentally behaving like a dead person. If this is your kind of Japan, the version underneath the travel videos, subscribe. New dives into hidden and abandoned Japan every week. And if this one held you, a like pushes it in front of the next viewer; it helps a small channel more than you would think.
