Yep, that little thing is part of Vanderbilt’s new “big voice” system which replaced a system of Mods and a 2001 sometime in 2022 we believe. There’s not much documentation online about the upgrade. It just sort of happened one day. I wasn’t the first to discover it, but it definitely took me by surprise when I tried recording an ambience awhile back. I initially thought a wack*ss system of old Whelens invaded. HyperSpike is well known for their extremely directional sound canons typically used in the military and police. Basically a competitor to LRAD. In recent times, they’ve scaled this technology up for use in outdoor warning systems. So…when I set up at this parking garage, I was expecting an actual “big voice” to boom from the sky. Nope. All I got was a mediocre voice message that sounds like something from a TTS program from 2006 and a stolen Whelen recording. Yes, that sounds 100% like it was ripped off the Whelen website. You can even hear the .mp3 artifacts. To be fair, the pulse tone actually sounded pretty cool, and was louder than the “Whelen tone”. During warnings, these apparently play an Eclipse recording. But the voice was total crap. I think HyperSpikes actually have great potential, but the recordings being used here are awful. Luckily the university has seven of these to compensate. With that being said, I strangely want to try recording another. Sirens at Vanderbilt University are tested every first Saturday of the month around Noon, right after Nashville Enjoy, and as always comment, like, and subscribe for more. Thanks!
