Thor came to the sea-giant Hymir disguised as a young traveller and asked to go fishing. When Hymir told him to find his own bait, Thor took the head of the giant's greatest black ox and rowed far past the usual fishing grounds, while Hymir, who had already hauled up two whales, begged him to turn back. Thor baited his line with the ox head and dropped it to the bottom of the ocean, where the World Serpent Jormungandr lies coiled around Midgard. The serpent took the bait. Thor pulled so hard that his feet broke through the boat and he stood on the sea floor, eye to eye with the serpent as it spat venom, and he raised his hammer. But Hymir, terrified, cut the line, and the serpent sank back into the deep. They will meet again at Ragnarok, where Thor kills the serpent, walks nine steps, and falls dead from its venom. A rolling sea ballad about the day the god of thunder caught the world on his line.

LYRICS
(Jormungandr)
Thor came walking to the giant's hall
Dressed as a lad in a traveller's grey
Hymir, giant of the frozen shore
Said, "We fish at the break of day"
"Bring your own bait," the giant laughed
So Thor took the head of the great black ox
And they rowed out under a cold red dawn
Past the skerries and the seal-grey rocks
Jormungandr, Jormungandr
Rising from the cold and deep
Thor has the serpent on the line
And the whole wide sea can't sleep
(Jormungandr)
Hymir hauled up two great whales
And he begged him, "Turn for the shore"
But Thor rowed on to the open sea
Where no boat had gone before
He dropped the ox head into the dark
Down to the coils at the edge of the world
The line pulled tight, the water roared
And the waves like a mountain curled
His feet broke through the bottom boards
And he stood on the ocean floor
The serpent rose with venom in its jaws
And the hammer rose with a roar
Then Hymir's knife flashed in the cold
Jormungandr, Jormungandr
Hymir cut the line in fear
Down you fell to the cold and deep
But the last great storm draws near
(Jormungandr)
When the wolf runs free and the long winter falls
You will rise from the sea once more
Thor will strike you down at last
Then walk nine steps and fall on the shore
Jormungandr, Jormungandr
Rising from the cold and deep
Nine steps, then the thunder falls
And the god and the serpent sleep
Jormungandr
(Jormungandr)
