Was the Odyssey real? A one-eyed giant, a bag of winds, a six-headed monster and a twenty-year journey home. For 2,500 years people have tried to find Odysseus's route on a real map. Archaeologists found some of it, including a palace you can still walk into today. We tell Homer's Odyssey the way the Greeks told it (the Cyclops and "My name is Nobody", the Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis, Penelope and the suitors, Argos the dog, the bow and the twelve axes) and test every piece against the evidence: the hunt for the real Ithaca and this year's geology result on Kefalonia, dwarf elephant skulls and the Cyclops, the ancient Greeks' own maps of the voyage, Nestor's cup, Carl Blegen's 1939 dig at the Palace of Nestor at Pylos and its Linear B tablets, the Uluburun shipwreck, the Sea Peoples' raids on Egypt carved at Medinet Habu, and the Bronze Age collapse. Then the verdict: what's true, what's possible, and what's legend. ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 Cold open 0:54 I. Twenty Years From Home 2:57 II. My Name Is Nobody 4:58 III. Monsters on the Map 7:08 IV. Murray's translation (1919, public domain) • Strabo, Geography 1.2.15 (Eratosthenes on the bag of the winds), trans. H. L. Jones (1917) · Thucydides 1.25 and 4.24 · Herodotus 2.152 and 4.177 • Ithaca: W. Dörpfeld (Lefkada); R. Bittlestone, J. Diggle & J. Underhill, Odysseus Unbound (2005), and their 2026 borehole results • The Cyclops and fossil elephant skulls: O. Abel (1914); A. Mayor, The First Fossil Hunters (2000). A theory, not a proven fact. • Nestor's cup from Pithekoussai (Ischia), c. 730 BC (our own translation) • Pylos: C. W. Blegen's excavation reports, the Palace of Nestor and its Linear B tablets • The Uluburun shipwreck: C. Pulak (2008) • Medinet Habu: the year-8 inscriptions and reliefs of Ramesses III (c. 1177 BC) The location of Homer's Ithaca, the reading of Nestor's cup and the link between Odysseus's "Cretan lie" and the Sea Peoples are debated; they are shown as possible, not as fact. On-screen tablets and reliefs are illustrations, not copies of single objects. 🎵 Music Music: Achilles, Teller of the Tales, Sneaky Snitch, Mystery Bazaar, Temple of the Manes, Lost Time, Clash Defiant, Five Armies by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com), licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... 🗺️ Maps Coastlines and rivers: Natural Earth. ⚔️ Watch next: Was the Trojan War Real?
