For centuries, scholars called the Trojan War a fairy tale. Then a millionaire with a copy of Homer dug into a hill in Turkey and found a city that had burned. Then another one under it. And another. So did the Trojan War really happen? We tell the legend the way the Greeks told it (Helen, the thousand ships, Achilles and Hector, the wooden horse) and test every piece against the evidence: Heinrich Schliemann's "Priam's Treasure" (wrong Troy, by more than a thousand years), the nine cities stacked inside the hill of Hisarlik, the city that burned around 1180 BC, Hittite clay letters about a place called Wilusa and a king called Alaksandu, and the collapse of the whole Bronze Age world. Then the verdict: what's true, what's possible, and what Homer made up. ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 Cold open 0:51 I. The Face That Launched a Thousand Ships 2:37 II. The Man Who Dug Up Homer 4:56 III. Tawagalawa letter quoted from G. Beckman, T. Bryce & E. Cline, The Ahhiyawa Texts (2011), p. 115. • Excavation reports of Schliemann, Dörpfeld, Blegen and Korfmann; C. B. Rose, The Archaeology of Greek and Roman Troy The links between Wilusa and Troy, Ahhiyawa and the Greeks, and Alaksandu and Alexandros are debated by scholars; theories about the wooden horse are shown as theories.
