Welcome to Glass in the Dark!
What's in the Box?! is our ongoing series where we unbox and explore vaseline and uranium glass found online. Each episode brings a fun mix of history, surprises, personality, and of course that unmistakable glow under UV light.
This episode spans different eras and styles, featuring some really unique pieces with interesting stories. Fair warning: we encountered packing peanuts twice in this shipment, which is never fun, but the pieces inside were worth the static.
Box 1: Decorated Fan Vase
A fan vase in canary yellow satin vaseline glass made by Tiffin / U.S. Glass in the 1920s. What makes this piece special is the decoration added after by the Ransburg company out of Indianapolis, Indiana. They were known for electrostatic painting, and the decoration on this piece is very thick and heavy. It's an unusual style, but there's something about it that really works.
Box 2: Two Pieces with Stories
Rose Pattern Tumbler: An Imperial Glass pattern that originated in 1912, but the vaseline glass version wouldn't be made until 70 years later when Summit Art Glass purchased the molds and began making pressings out of their garage. This piece is meant to replace a misshapen tumbler in my lemonade set.
Pukeberg Martini Glass: This one was a mystery for a while. It's a deep yellow, amber glass shaped like a martini glass with a square foot and a slight art nouveau design. After doing some research, I eventually found a few matches and figured out it was made by Pukeberg in the 1920s. The name Jules Venon kept coming up alongside this pattern, though I wasn't sure if that was the name of the pattern maker or the pattern itself.
Box 3: Modern Mayan
This modern piece was made in Saint Pete, Florida between 2020 and 2021 from Glass by Lindsey. It's cast from yellow czech uranium glass and it's titled Mayan. The slab-like appearance really shows off the rich detail and patterning. This is one of two Mayan patterns she cast. You may recognize her other work as she is still an active seller and maker.
