The State said 94 miles an hour and a jerk of the wheel. The defense said that would make it a suicide mission. On Day 2 of the Dying Last Words Trial, the jury decided. This is Day 2 of the trial of Leigha Mumby in Flagler County, Florida, the whole court day with every recess cut out. She was charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving with serious bodily injury in the February 2025 crash on I-95 that injured her boyfriend, Daniel Waterman. He died eight months later, at 22. The one person who said she crashed on purpose is dead, and the judge ruled the jury would not hear a word he said. The State dropped the one charge that needed intent. So the case went to six jurors on the car's data, two phone calls and a trooper. They sent out one question, and Judge Dawn Nichols told them she could not answer it. The question itself is never heard on the court's feed. What did this jury want to know that the evidence did not tell them? Then they came back: guilty on both counts. Each juror was polled, and the judge remanded Leigha Mumby into custody. WITNESS & HEARING GUIDE 0:00:00 What this video is, and a preview 0:00:19 Video starts 0:02:38 Closing argument for the State. Assistant State Attorney Melissa Clark lays out the motive she argues: a pregnancy, a text from another woman, and anger behind the wheel. 0:13:57 The car's data as the State reads it: 94 miles an hour, the accelerator at 87 percent, and the wheel jerked to the left. 0:14:48 Closing argument for the defense. Defense Attorney Reid Hart takes the jury back through the crash expert's own words and the last seconds before the car left the road. 0:23:06 The defense's central line: the State's version means she chose to risk every life in that car, her own included. 0:23:58 The defense's last ask: "if you've heard something that gives you a reasonable doubt, your verdict is not guilty." 0:26:36 The State's rebuttal. Melissa Clark answers the suicide mission point head on: "I don't have to prove she intended to hurt Daniel." 0:34:38 Judge Dawn Nichols instructs the jury. What reckless means in Florida law, what the State must prove on each count, and what reasonable doubt requires. 0:51:36 The jury goes out to deliberate. The judge tells the alternates why they never learn who they are until the end, then court works through the verdict form with the jury out. 1:05:59 The jury sends out a question. Judge Nichols brings them back to say she cannot answer it: "I'm not able to go outside the scope of the evidence." 1:06:29 The jury returns with its verdict. Six jurors walk back into the courtroom. 1:09:06 The verdict is read on both counts, and each juror is polled. 1:11:27 Judge Nichols adjudicates her guilty, orders a presentence investigation, revokes her bond and remands her into custody. Deputies lead her out. --- COMPLETE CASE COVERAGE justiceisaprocess.com SUBSCRIBE for daily trial coverage and hit the notification bell so you never miss testimony.
