Hand Sewing with Unshin | Making a Patchwork Skirt from Old Clothes

This time, I’m making a gathered patchwork skirt entirely by hand, using clothes that are no longer worn. I wanted to show that Unshin — a traditional Japanese hand-sewing technique — can be used for much more than Sashiko. Once you learn Unshin, hand sewing becomes faster, easier, and so much more enjoyable. You can use it not only for Sashiko, but also for mending, remaking old clothes, and even making garments. For this skirt, I took apart old clothes, pieced the fabrics together, and reused some of the original hems and details. The basic shape is very simple — just rectangles of fabric — so you can make a skirt like this from old clothes or from a single piece of fabric.
