Winter, 54 BC. A Roman camp in northern Gaul is on fire, and everything the soldiers own is burning behind them. Almost none of them turn around to look. By the end of this video, you'll know why.
The Romans had central heating, but their soldiers almost never got it in the barracks. So how did a legionary get through a freezing night? We follow one winter night in a Roman camp, watch by watch: the trousers Rome tried to ban, the socks sent to a soldier on Hadrian's Wall, the leather tent that turned eight men into a heater, the sentry who could be clubbed to death for falling asleep, the day Hannibal turned the cold into a weapon at the Trebia, and the fort bathhouse. Then, two Roman winter camps facing the same enemy in the same winter. Only one of them saw spring.
