Jorge Chagas: Lisbon's Best Street Photographer

Jorge Chagas is a street photographer from Lisbon, Portugal. He photographs his hometown with a strong feel for what he calls 'Lisbon light', sharp Lisbon sunbeams, long shadows, light that brings out Lisbon's beautiful colours. He got more serious about photography at university, studying it as part of his course after already being interested for years. Street photography was a natural fit. He likes cities, movement, and the rhythm of daily life. Lisbon isn’t just a backdrop for him. He grew up there, and photographing it feels personal with the streets, the light, the people passing through. His photos often have a cinematic look. You’ll see people walking through patches of sunlight, scenes shot through windows, strong shadows, and compositions that feel considered without looking stiff. He works in both color and black and white. Sometimes he keeps the warm Lisbon colour; other times he strips it away so the light and shapes stand out more. Jorge has shown work in exhibitions and published a book called A Luz de Lisboa (The Light of Lisbon), which is pretty much what his photography is about, the light of his city and the people moving through it.
