FOBBV ~ SHADOW & KAYDEE HAVE 1ST DISAGREEMENT IN ROOST TREE! 😲 BOUNDARIES BEING SET & ZOOM! 8.24.26

It was an interesting evening at the Roost Tree for Shadow & Kaydee this evening! Kaydee flies in to the basement first and she preens on a branch for about 15 minutes before she flew to the Roost Tree. Shadow was already there on the branch (he is to the right, Kaydee to the left). I did a zoom on the video so we could see their interactions better. Shadow moved up to a higher branch above Kaydee and she reached up to nibble affectionately at Shadow. He pecked her head and she almost lost her balance. Kaydee then moved away to the right giving Shadow his space. But it didn't last very long as Kaydee moved back towards Shadow again - only this time she approached him on his branch and went to perch right next to him. Shadow did not like her being that close and he began to vocalize his displeasure. Kaydee reached up to him a couple of times nibbling his feathers. Shadow continued vocalizing and remained dominant. Kaydee then moved away & down a little from Shadow. Kaydee is roosting to the right of Shadow tonight - a respectable distance is between them. This disagreement is not unusual to see between two eagles that have not formed a bond yet. Shadow was setting his boundaries with Kaydee, in her youthful excitement to be close, was too much for Shadow to take right now. Shadow made his intentions clear and Kaydee then moved over on the branch giving him his space. She also submitted to Shadow's dominance by lowering her head to him. Kaydee's preening attempts were not well received at this time. Shadow did not reject her - he is just setting his boundaries. He does tolerate her fine during the day and they have been roosting together now for over a couple of weeks. If an eagle were to reject a suitor, they would either chase them off or they would fly off - Shadow did neither. As a side note, Jackie was not receptive at all to Shadow's advances and she was quite vocal and did the same thing by pecking at him. It just takes time for two eagles to bond together - it is much easier when it is close to breeding season and their hormones are raging then it is now in the off season and with Shadow losing his mate Jackie recently. Remember they are wild raptors and we can't put human emotion into their actions. Trust the eagles.
