KAYDEE SHOWS IMPRESSIVE BRANCH MANAGER SKILLS & IS AFFECTIONATE w/SHADOW BUT HE IS NOT READY 8.23.26

This is Kaydee's second visit to the nest today & she arrived just after Shadow & lands with a big thud! Kaydee is a big female standing next to Shadow! Kaydee is ready to get to work & begins moving and untangling the big sticks on the right side of the nest while Shadow watches! Shadow goes to the front porch and lets her do her thing but he keeps tabs on her because she is after all, moving his & Jackie's sticks! Kaydee shows impressive Branch Manager skills moving these big sticks around & she is just following her instincts. Shadow can't stay away for too long & returns to the nest and joins in moving a stick or two. Then things get a little testy as they both have a beaky disagreement. Kaydee then affectionately nibbles on Shadow's feathers - which he did not like & he returns to the front porch. Shadow is not ready to move on yet. Kaydee continues to be industrious with the stick remodeling & we can see Kaydee is a big female with a strong thick beak, powerful legs & feet and she is bigger than Shadow. Shadow is watching Kaydee and supervising from the front porch. He decides to return to the nest & they both move a stick together. Kaydee can't help herself, she nibbles again at Shadow's feathers but he is not receptive. After more beaky discussions & vocalizations, Shadow goes back on the front porch, he had enough. Shadow's hormones are not active at this time of the year & with Jackie's death, he is not yet ready to move on with a new female. But that is okay as Kaydee is showing interest & there is plenty of time for a relationship to form down the road. This is all normal eagle behavior that we are watching on the live eagle cam. Kaydee is becoming more confident in the territory and at the nest, bringing in fish & making herself at home, moving sticks on the nest & waiting for Shadow to join her. Kaydee is young but independent & every day here at Big Bear brings her new experiences. She may not know what a nest means at this moment, but her instincts will guide her every step of the way as she makes herself right at home.
