Penumbra (2026) for orchestra - Asher Lurie

"Penumbra" explores the space between light and shadow, where familiar shapes emerge in shifting forms. The title is drawn from the Latin paene, meaning nearly, and umbra, meaning shadow. A penumbra is a region where a source of illumination is partially obscured from sight, most commonly referring to a transitional area between light and darkness. Throughout the work, musical ideas are constantly passed between instrumental groups, shifting in and out of focus as they move through the orchestra. Dense soundscapes are contrasted with energetic ostinatos, while the exchange of voices and timbres gradually transforms the piece's themes with each return. "Penumbra" encompasses the full dynamic spectrum while concealing contrasting layers of sound at every dynamic level. The result is a musical landscape where familiar ideas are continually recontextualized through changing orchestral colors.
