The School That Saved My Faith: A Conversation With Dr. Eric Walsh

Dr. Eric Walsh, MD, DrPH, has spent his career at the intersection of medicine, public health, ministry, and Christian faith. Yet his remarkable journey might have taken an entirely different direction if not for Adventist education. In this deeply personal conversation, Dr. Walsh recounts attending an academically elite preparatory high school in Miami—an environment he experienced as deeply secular and marked by racism. Although he once dreamed of attending an Ivy League university, he came to recognize that the path he was following was steadily drawing him away from his faith and the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Dr. Walsh explains why he believes Adventist education helped preserve both his faith and his sense of calling. The conversation also explores his work as a physician, public-health leader, pastor, and international gospel speaker. Drawing upon his experience in medicine and public health, Dr. Walsh examines the growing mental-health and substance-use challenges facing young people and addresses the responsibility of Christian homes, churches, and schools to provide something more than academic achievement alone. Dr. Walsh earned his medical degree from the University of Miami and graduate degrees in public health from Loma Linda University.
