Teachers have always dealt with challenging behavior—so why does classroom management seem so much harder today?
After our recent video about what teachers aren’t taught about student behavior, someone raised a fair question: teachers decades ago weren’t extensively trained in behavior analysis either, and classrooms seemed different.
So…are students actually getting worse?
The answer is more complicated.
In this video, we look at how the job of teaching has changed: more inclusive classrooms, greater recognition of ADHD, autism, dyslexia and emotional/behavioral needs, differentiation, data collection, technology, changing disciplinary practices—and growing expectations that haven’t always been matched with additional training and resources.
We’ll also discuss why removing a behavior isn’t necessarily the same as solving it, why consequences still matter, and how a behavior-analysis lens can give educators another tool for understanding what students need.
Teachers: Does teaching feel different today than it did 10, 25, or even 50 years ago? Tell us what you’ve noticed in the comments.
And have a classroom question you want us to tackle?
Finish this sentence:
“What do I do when my student ______?”
Drop it in our Community page. Your question could become an upcoming video.
