The friends have just made a beautiful coloured-sand flower - then a little gust sweeps over and whoosh, the grains scatter and the petals blur! Momo lays a big leaf over it - but now nobody can see the picture. Bobo presses a flat stone on a petal - it smudges. Dot gently blows the loose sand off - and even more grains fly. Then, by the stream, Dot spots a flat stone where coloured grains are stuck in a thin dried film of muddy water: a gust carries the loose sand beside it away, but those grains stay put. Her idea: she dips a shell in the clear, thin muddy water and, from up high, flicks the gentlest sprinkle over the picture. It dries into a fine see-through film - and when the wind blows again, the sand flower stays whole and bright. TALK ABOUT IT TOGETHER 1. What happened to the sand picture in the wind? 2. Why didn't the leaf help? 3. Why did the stone smudge the petal? 4. Why did the grains on the stream stone stay put? 5. What else can a thin clear layer protect? FAQ Q: What age is this for? A: Toddlers and preschoolers, about 2-6 years old, ideally watched together with a grown-up. Q: What does this episode teach? A: Early science and problem solving: loose dry grains blow away easily, but a very thin, clear layer of watery mud dries into a film that sticks the grains together and holds them in place - while the colours still show through. Q: Can we try it at home? A: Yes - with a grown-up, make a little picture with coloured sand or sugar on paper, mist half of it very lightly with watered-down glue, let it dry, then blow gently and see which half stays. Q: Are there words? A: No. Clever Clay Friends is wordless: the story is told with actions, music and sound, so children can tell it in their own words.
