The friends dig a lovely little hole in the fine sand - and straight away its walls slide down and fill it in again! They dig it again, deeper: it caves in even faster. Momo pats the edge firmly: it holds for a few seconds, then slides in again. Dot looks very closely at the sand trickling down. Her idea: the wide, soft, dry grass blades! Momo digs the hole once more, and Dot and Bobo press the blades flat against the inside walls, one by one - a soft lining. Momo pats the edge again: a few grains roll, but the walls stay. The hole keeps its shape, and the three crouch round it and quietly look in. ABOUT THIS VIDEO • Series: Clever Clay Friends, Episode 39 - "Our Sand Hole Keeps Caving In!" (0:55) • For: toddlers and preschoolers, about 2-6 years old • Problem-solving idea: loose stuff like dry sand can't hold a shape by itself - a lining on the inside helps it keep its form • Style: wordless clay animation with gentle music, soft sound effects and the friends' wooden "da-da-da" footsteps - no talking, so it works in every language • Made by: Da Da Da Clay CHAPTERS 0:00 The hole caves in! 0:02 Digging deeper 0:06 It caves in faster 0:11 Patting the edge firmly 0:15 Caving in again 0:17 Watching the sand trickle 0:20 Dot's idea: soft wide grass 0:25 Lining the walls 0:39 The hole stays! TALK ABOUT IT TOGETHER 1. Why did the hole fill in again? 2. Why did the deeper hole cave in faster? 3. What did the grass blades do to the sand walls? 4. Why did the hole stay after the lining? 5. Have you ever dug in dry sand and in wet sand - which one keeps its shape? FAQ Q: What age is this for? A: Toddlers and preschoolers, about 2-6 years old, ideally watched together with a grown-up. Q: What does this episode teach? A: Early science and problem solving: dry, loose sand slides down because its grains do not stick together; lining the inside walls with something flat and bendy holds the grains back, so the hole keeps its shape. Q: Can we try it at home? A: Yes - in a sandpit or a tray of dry sand, with a grown-up: dig a small hole and watch the walls slide, then line it with big leaves or a paper cup sleeve and see it stay. Q: Are there words? A: No. Clever Clay Friends is wordless: the story is told with actions, music and sound, so children can tell it in their own words.
