The life cycle of mosses can feel confusing when protonema, gametophyte, sporophyte, antheridium and archegonium appear together in the same diagram.
In this detailed NEET Biology session, Ritu Ma’am explains the complete life cycle of mosses step by step, with special focus on alternation of generations, ploidy levels and important NCERT concepts frequently tested in NEET.
📚 Concepts explained in this session:
✅ Position of mosses under Bryophytes
✅ Dominant gametophytic phase in mosses
✅ Germination of haploid spores
✅ Formation of the protonema stage
✅ Development of the leafy gametophyte
✅ Male and female gametophytes
✅ Structure and function of antheridium
✅ Structure and function of archegonium
✅ Formation of male and female gametes
✅ Importance of water during fertilisation
✅ Formation of the diploid zygote
✅ Development of the sporophyte
✅ Foot, seta and capsule of the moss sporophyte
✅ Dependence of sporophyte on the gametophyte
✅ Meiosis inside the capsule or sporangium
✅ Formation and dispersal of haploid spores
✅ Alternation between gametophytic and sporophytic generations
✅ Important haploid and diploid stages for NEET questions
The haploid spore germinates to form the protonema, which later develops into the leafy gametophyte. The gametophyte produces the male and female sex organs—antheridia and archegonia.
In the presence of water, the male gamete reaches the egg and fertilisation produces a diploid zygote. This zygote develops into the sporophyte, which remains attached to and nutritionally dependent on the gametophyte.
Inside the capsule of the sporophyte, meiosis produces haploid spores. These spores disperse, germinate and begin the next generation—completing the moss life cycle.
This session is especially useful for:
• NEET 2027 aspirants
• Class 11 Biology students
• Students studying Plant Kingdom
• Aspirants confused about alternation of generations
• Students struggling with haploid and diploid stages
• Aspirants revising Bryophytes from NCERT
• Students preparing for statement-based NEET questions
Watch the complete session carefully, redraw the life-cycle diagram and label the ploidy of every stage. This will help you solve diagram-based, sequence-based and statement-based questions more confidently.
