The partition of India is one of the defining events of the twentieth century: violence and movement of people on an unthinkable scale, and a subcontinent pulled apart. Ireland’s partition was a smaller affair, but no less important to those who lived it, and no less formative for the island and the identities that emerged from it. This panel, the first of two on the theme of partition, examines those great separations from close up: memories, objects, and archives that tell the story of what it was to live through the great dislocations that still define us so much today. Aanchal Malhotra is an oral historian and author of the critically acclaimed non-fiction books, Remnants Of A Separation and In the Language of Remembering. She has also authored a novel titled The Book of Everlasting Things. She has won the Council for Museum Anthropology Book Award and been shortlisted for the British Academy Book Prize and Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar, among other honours. She is the co-founder of the Museum of Material Memory. Lady Kishwar Desai is an award-winning author, playwright, and historian, recognised for her contributions to art, history, and literature in both the UK and India. Her sixth book, The Longest Kiss: The Life and Times of Devika Rani, won the National Film Award for Best Book on Indian Cinema and is being adapted into a feature film by a leading studio. Her debut novel, Witness the Night, received the Costa Award for Best First Novel in the UK and Ireland. She is the Founder and Chair of the world’s first Partition Museum at the historic Town Hall in Amritsar, which marks ten years and has won seven national and international awards. Marie Coleman is Professor of Twentieth-Century Irish History at Queen’s University Belfast. She has published extensively on the Irish Revolution (1916–1923). In 2020–21, she served on the Centenary Advisory Historical Panel, advising the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland on the centenary of partition and the creation of Northern Ireland. Susan McKay is a journalist, broadcaster, and writer recognised for her significant contribution to public life in Ireland, both North and South. Her work addresses major social issues, including the position of women and survivors of abuse, as well as the experiences and perspectives of Northern Irish Protestants. She has written for The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Guardian, London Review of Books, and The Irish Times. Her book Bear in Mind These Dead explores the Northern Ireland conflict through bereaved voices. She has also collaborated with the WAVE Trauma Centre and produced acclaimed documentaries including The Daughter’s Story and Inez, A Challenging Woman.
