I came to Kota Jail in Johor Bahru hoping to join the guided tour — but it was already full. So I explored the old prison on my own. On a hot, quiet Sunday afternoon, I walked through the empty corridors, former prison areas, communal facilities, visiting area and courtyard, imagining what these spaces may have looked like more than a century ago. Once known as Ayer Molek Prison, this historic compound has stood in Johor Bahru for more than 140 years. Today, parts of the old prison have taken on a completely different life — including cafés and, surprisingly, a padel court. Thanks for walking with me, and I’ll see you somewhere else around Johor Bahru. #KotaJail #JohorBahru #JBHistory #Malaysia #FutureJB
