Konnichiwa everyone! Welcome back to Little Maya!
In Episode 5, join me as I travel deep into the beautiful mountains of Toyama Prefecture to discover Ainokura Gassho-Zukuri Village (相倉合掌造り集落), a peaceful historical village in the Gokayama region of Japan.
Far away from the busy streets of modern cities, Ainokura feels like a place where time has stood still.
Surrounded by mountains and breathtaking natural scenery, this remarkable village preserves traditional Japanese farmhouses with steep thatched roofs designed to withstand the region's heavy snowfall.
But behind these beautiful houses lies something even more meaningful: generations of history, traditional craftsmanship, community, and a way of life that continues today.
In this episode, I invite you to walk with me through the quiet village paths, admire the unique architecture, experience the peaceful atmosphere, and discover why this small mountain settlement is such an important part of Japan's cultural heritage.
A place that may seem forgotten by the modern world, yet continues to be protected and cherished for future generations.
Thank you for joining me on another little journey through Japan.
ABOUT AINOKURA GASSHO-ZUKURI VILLAGE
Location: Ainokura, Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, Japan
Ainokura is one of three villages included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing "Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama," inscribed in 1995.
The village is home to approximately 20 preserved Gassho-Zukuri houses. Their distinctive roofs resemble hands joined together in prayer.
Unlike an outdoor museum, Ainokura remains a living community where local residents continue to maintain their homes and traditions.
Please respect residents' privacy, private property, and local visitor guidelines when exploring this beautiful heritage village.
