Crimson Ramblers is a late-period Joseph F. Lamb rag from 1960, presented as a ragtime piano Synthesia video with falling notes. Lamb stood alongside Scott Joplin and James Scott as one of the Big Three of classical ragtime, the only non-African American of the trio. A chance 1907 meeting with Joplin in a sheet music office launched his publishing career with John Stark. By the 1950s his craft had matured beautifully, and this rag shows that polish; follow along as a ragtime piano tutorial.
🎼 ABOUT JOSEPH F. LAMB
Joseph Francis Lamb (1887-1960) was born in Montclair, New Jersey, to Irish immigrant parents, and is the only white member of the "big three" of classic ragtime alongside Scott Joplin and James Scott. Largely self-taught, he was buying ragtime sheet music at John Stark's New York office in 1907 when he fell into conversation with a quiet older customer who turned out to be Joplin himself; Joplin heard his pieces and recommended him to Stark. "Sensation Rag", "Ethiopia Rag", "Top Liner Rag" and the magnificent "American Beauty Rag" of 1913 followed. Lamb stopped publishing around 1919 and worked in the import trade, largely forgotten until researchers tracked him down in New Jersey in 1949; he recorded an album shortly before his death. His rags are the most romantic and most pianistic of the classic school.
The most lyrical branch of classic ragtime: full-bodied, romantic writing with thick chords, moving inner voices and sweeping arpeggios over a steady alternating bass. Harmony is richer and more chromatic than Joplin's, the phrases longer and more song-like. Moderate tempo, expressive dynamics, warm pedalling.

🎧 HOW TO PRACTISE THIS PIECE
Ragtime rewards patience: keep the left-hand bass-chord alternation strictly in time and let the right hand's syncopation float against it. Practise hands separately first, set the tempo to around 60% until the leaps are safe, and resist rushing — Joplin famously warned that ragtime should never be played fast.
