🎼 ABOUT JAMES P. JOHNSON
James P. Johnson (1894-1955) is the man usually called the father of Harlem stride. Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he moved to New York as a boy, absorbed classical training and ragtime in equal measure, and by his late teens was playing the saloons, dance halls and rent parties where the style was forged. "Carolina Shout" became the piece every ambitious Harlem pianist had to master; the young Duke Ellington learned it by slowing down Johnson's piano roll and following the keys. His song "Charleston", written for the 1923 Broadway show Runnin' Wild, defined the sound of the decade. He also wrote extended concert works, and he mentored the young Fats Waller. For students, Johnson is exactly where ragtime's fixed figures loosen into swing, and his pieces are a rigorous, thrilling workout for both hands.
Foundational stride: a powerful, wide-leaping left hand moving between low single notes or tenths and offbeat chords, often at a brisk clip. The right hand mixes ragtime figuration with bluesy riffs and hand-crossing tricks. Contrasting strains like a rag, but the rhythm has already started to swing.
