Knowing and Doing God’s Will Romans 12:1-2; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7 Introduction What is God’s will for my life? How do I know God’s will for my life? God’s will is not something that God has hidden from us: • God’s will is not something to be revealed to us through hallucination or some mystical or supernatural intervention • God’s will is not with a so-called new-gen “Apostle” or “Prophet” God’s will is that which God Himself has revealed in His Holy Word, and it should be the pursuit of every Christian to know it and do it. This morning, in Biblical perspective series, it is: “Knowing and Doing God’s Will” 1. What Is God’s Will 1. God’s will is His Counsel, His Plans, His Eternal Decrees Psalm 33:10-12, “The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the people no effect. The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.” 2. Good, Perfect, and Holy Romans 12:2, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” 3. Our Salvation 1 Timothy 2:3-4, “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” 4. Our Sanctification 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7, “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immortality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor . . . For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.” 1 Peter 4:2, God’s design for a holy sexual life Faithfulness in marriage, and abstain in singleness 5. Our Thankfulness 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 6. Higher than our Thoughts Isaiah 55:8-9, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” God’s will is never against us, but it may not be always as the way we think or plan! 2. When Is God’s Will God has His timing in everything: 1. Jesus John 7:6,8, “Then Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come.” 2. Moses Moses had to wait 80 years to be the deliverer of Israel, though he wanted very early in age. 3. How Is God’s Will 1. His Word Reveals It Psalm 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Joshua 1:8, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will have good success.” • God’s Word is His prescriptive will • When a judge knows the constitution (the law), he passes right judgments. 2. A Renewed Mind Understands It Romans 12:2, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” 3. Experiencing Peace Confirms It Philippians 4:6-7, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests by made known to God; And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Colossians 3:15, “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.” • Never go against your peace! 4. Godly People Affirm It Proverbs 11:14, “Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” 5. The Highway of Holiness Guides It Proverbs 3:5-7, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your path. Do not be wise in your own eyes, fear the LORD and depart from evil.” But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water . . . And whatever he does shall prosper. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous . . .” Conclusion Psalm 37:3-5, “Trust in the LORD, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the LORD; And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.” Reflection Am I a doer of God’s will?
