한독 정상회담, 무역•첨단기술•방산 협력의 새 장 열다
Welcome to Within The Frame, where we bring the most pressing issues across the globe into focus. I'm Kim Mok-yeon.
South Korea and Germany are looking to take their partnership to the next level.
President Lee Jae Myung and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met in Seoul today, with trade, advanced technology, energy, and defense cooperation on the agenda.
But there's a bigger picture behind this summit.
While Germany's president is visiting China, Merz is strengthening ties across Asia, seeking to reduce dependence on Beijing amid growing global trade tensions.
And for Korea, Germany is already its largest trading partner in Europe.
So what has today's summit achieved? And could closer ties between Seoul and Berlin help both countries navigate an increasingly uncertain global economy?
For answers to this, we are joined by Song Soo-young, Professor of Business and Economics at Chung-Ang University. Welcome.
Also joining us is Mason Richey, Professor of Int'l Politics at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies
1. Let's start with today's summit. What stood out to you most, and how significant is this meeting for Korea-Germany relations?
2. What's also interesting is that Germany's president is visiting China while Merz tours other Asian countries. What does that tell us about Germany's approach to China?
3. On the economic side, Germany wants to rely less on China without cutting ties completely.
How could Korea help, especially when it comes to supply chains?
4. Technology seems to be a big part of that.
Korea and Germany are both strong in chips and battery manufacturing and AI development, but they're also competitors. Where could they work together most effectively?
5. Of course, technology is also becoming a security issue. Could we see closer cooperation on AI and cybersecurity between the two countries?
6. Defense is another interesting area.
Korea and Germany compete in the global defense market, so where could they actually benefit from working together?
7. Finally, looking at the bigger picture, could this summit be a turning point for Korea-Germany relations? And what would it take to build a stronger partnership in the years ahead?
That's where we'll leave our discussion tonight, Prof.Song and Professor Richey, thank you both for joining me this evening and sharing your insights.
That will be all from us on Within the Frame.
Be sure to tune in next time as we continue to explore the stories that matter. Until then, stay informed and engaged!
