In 1856, 18-year-old chemistry student William Henry Perkin was trying to synthesize quinine, a valuable treatment for malaria, when his experiment produced a dark, seemingly useless residue instead. But while examining the failed reaction, Perkin noticed something remarkable: the material could create a vivid purple color. Rather than discarding the mistake, he investigated further and developed mauveine, one of the first commercially successful synthetic dyes. The discovery helped transform the textile and chemical industries and opened new possibilities for synthetic chemistry. This video explores Perkin’s failed experiment, the unexpected color hidden inside it, and how an attempt to make medicine helped launch an entirely new industry.
